Managing Stress with Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Choices

I want to highlight dealing with stress again as I know most of you are working from home or just trying to deal with missing other normal daily routines. Lets look at some ways we can prevent stress from getting to us!

Eat foods with mood enhancers or natural stress relievers.

Some of these include:

  • chamomile tea

  • turkey

  • avocado

  • dark chocolate

  • asparagus

  • leafy greens

  • omega-3 (found in salmon and grass fed beef)

Drink lots of water to stay hydrated

Drink lots of water!

Your immune system functions best when your muscles and organs are functioning best. It expels toxins and waste products and brings important nutrient to the cells.

Get 8 hours of sleep for natural stress relief

Try and get 8 hours of sleep.

Being sleep deprived can drastically increase your stress levels. Getting enough sleep by maintaining a regular sleep/wake pattern, keeping your bedroom calm and quiet, avoiding tech for an hour before bed and limiting caffeine after lunch is vital for battling food cravings.

Research has shown that interrupted sleep patterns can change levels of hunger and appetite hormones in the body, with a study by Kings College demonstrating that the sleep-deprived grabbed more low fiber, low protein and high-fat foods.

Meditate everyday to help minimize stress

Meditate

Set aside a portion of the day to stop and practice breathing and deep thinking. There are also apps you can download to help with this. The Mayo Clinic finds that meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that can benefit both your emotional well-being and your overall health.

And these benefits don't end when your meditation session ends. Meditation can help carry you more calmly through your day and may help you manage symptoms of certain medical conditions.

Stretch

Doesn't matter what stretches you do! Promoting blood flow to your muscles will help relieve tension. You can stretch by setting up a yoga mat and putting on calming music, or you can choose to multitask and stretch while watching TV. Choose a routine that works for you.
