Eating Healthy During Lockdown

With the crazy times we have going on now, its very easy to get off track with a healthy eating plan. I find that one of three things happen that make people choose the wrong foods:

  1. The foods they usually eat are all gone.

  2. People get home and stress eat bad food.

  3. People are working from home and with kids, which leads to "bored" eating or "grazing".

Here is a list of some foods that should be available in most stores, even now, that will not only help you stay on track, but can also boost your immune system.

  • Fruits and vegetables: These are both always in stock. Focus on berries, apples, and oranges. For vegetables, pick as many different colored veggies as you can for variety and the vitamins and minerals. The fruit can be a great option for grazing or snacking.

  • Ezekiel bread: While most processed bread is almost always gone, if you look in the frozen area, you should be able to find this whole grain, fiber packed bread. It goes great toasted with some all natural almond butter spread on it.

  • Oatmeal: Great source of fiber which is good for gut health. A healthy gut is key to a healthy immune system.

  • Almonds: Choose these as a healthier alternative for grazing.

  • Chicken, fish, and eggs: These are all great sources of protein. Protein is key not only for maintaining a healthy weight, but a strong immune system as well. You can opt for frozen chicken if the fresh kind is gone. You can also get canned tuna if fresh fish is not available.

Choosing healthy foods at the grocery store

A typical day of eating from home would look something like this:

  • Breakfast: 2 eggs, 1/2 avocado, 1/2 cup oatmeal

  • Snack: handful almonds and piece of fruit

  • Lunch: chicken or fish and mixed sautéed veggies

  • Snack: 2 pieces Ezekiel bread and almond butter

  • Dinner: chicken or fish and small baked sweet potato

While the world is in lockdown, that home chores multiply and we adjust to knew routines, keeping healthy is essential. What we eat plays a fundamental role in our wellness and we can use the fact that we are home more as an opportunity to eat healthy, exercise and discover new recipes.
