Dolphin Push-Ups - A Hidden Gem of Upper Body Workouts

Are you looking to shake up your fitness routine and challenge your upper body in new ways? Look no further than the dolphin push-up. At Revive Fitness we're always on the lookout for effective exercises that can help our clients reach their fitness goals.

The dolphin push-up is one of those exercises that often flies under the radar but packs a serious punch when it comes to building strength and stability.

What Are Dolphin Push-Ups?

Dolphin push-ups are a variation of the traditional push-up that combines elements of yoga and strength training

This exercise starts in a position similar to the downward-facing dog yoga pose, but with your forearms on the ground instead of your hands.

From there, you lower your head towards your hands and then push back up, creating a rocking motion that engages multiple muscle groups.

Dolphin Push-Ups - A Hidden Gem of Upper Body Workouts

The Key Muscles Worked

When you perform dolphin push-ups, you're targeting several important muscle groups:

  1. Shoulders (Deltoids): The primary movers in this exercise.

  2. Upper Back: Particularly the trapezius and rhomboids.

  3. Core: Your abdominal muscles work overtime to maintain stability.

  4. Chest: While not the main focus, your pecs still get some action.

  5. Triceps: They assist in the pushing motion.

Why Dolphin Push-Ups Deserve a Spot in Your Workout

Shoulder Strength and Stability - Dolphin push-ups are excellent for building shoulder strength and stability. This is crucial for overall upper body health and can help prevent injuries in daily life and other exercises.

Core Engagement - Your core has to work hard to keep your body stable throughout the movement. This makes dolphin push-ups a sneaky good core exercise.

Improved Flexibility - The position of this exercise helps stretch your hamstrings, calves, and shoulders, improving overall flexibility.

Preparation for Advanced Moves - If you're working towards more advanced exercises like handstands or forearm stands, dolphin push-ups are an excellent preparatory exercise.

Low Impact - Unlike traditional push-ups, dolphin push-ups put less stress on your wrists, making them a great alternative for those with wrist issues.

How to Perform Dolphin Push-Ups Correctly

  1. Start on your hands and knees.

  2. Lower your forearms to the ground, keeping them parallel and shoulder-width apart.

  3. Tuck your toes and lift your hips, creating an inverted V-shape with your body.

  4. Keeping your legs straight (but not locked), begin to lower your head towards your hands.

  5. Just before your head touches the ground, push through your shoulders to return to the starting position.

  6. That's one rep. Aim for 8-12 reps to start.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sagging Hips: Keep your core engaged to maintain a straight line from your head to your heels.

  • Shrugging Shoulders: Pull your shoulder blades down your back to avoid unnecessary tension in your neck.

  • Bending Elbows: Your elbows should stay locked throughout the movement.

  • Holding Your Breath: Remember to breathe steadily throughout the exercise.

Incorporating Dolphin Push-Ups into Your Routine

At Revive Fitness, we recommend starting with 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps, 2-3 times per week. As you build strength and comfort with the movement, you can increase the volume or add variations to keep challenging yourself.

Variations to Try

  1. Single-Leg Dolphin Push-Ups: Lift one leg off the ground to increase the challenge to your core.

  2. Dolphin Push-Up Holds: Hold the bottom position for 10-30 seconds to build isometric strength.

  3. Dolphin Push-Up to Forearm Plank: Alternate between the dolphin push-up position and a forearm plank for an extra core challenge.

While dolphin push-ups are generally safe for most people, it's important to listen to your body. If you feel any pain (not to be confused with the discomfort of a challenging exercise), stop and consult with a fitness professional or healthcare provider.

Progressing with Dolphin Push-Ups

As with any exercise, progression is key to continued improvement with dolphin push-ups. There are several ways to make this exercise more challenging as you grow stronger.

Start by increasing your reps, adding just 1-2 to each set. Once you can comfortably complete your target reps, consider adding another set to your routine.

Another effective method is to slow down the pace of your movements. By performing the exercise more slowly, you increase the time under tension, which can lead to greater muscle growth and strength gains.

For an advanced variation, try placing your feet on a stability ball. This modification significantly increases the demand on your core muscles, making the exercise even more effective for overall body strength and stability.

Remember, the key to progression is to challenge yourself gradually and consistently, always maintaining proper form to maximize benefits and minimize injury risk.
